Last week, Nepal was hit by record monsoon rains, more than 700 mm in two days in some areas, causing flooding and landslides. Houses, roads and other infrastructure were washed away. Parts of the capital Kathmandu are still under water. Access roads are impassable and many residents are without electricity and drinking water. Schools in Kathmandu will remain closed for several days. There has also been heavy rain in Sailung. In addition to the considerable flooding, three houses have completely collapsed due to landslides and parts of the road have disappeared.
The community, as soon as possible, started helping to save what could be saved. A resident was pulled from the rubble with four broken ribs and a broken arm and carried by stretcher to the hospital in Charikot. From there she was later transferred to the trauma hospital in Kathmandu. A 12-year-old boy also broke his hand and leg. Fortunately, there were no other very serious injuries.
Unfortunately, more than 30 goats from the various families also died under the remains of the houses and in the mud flow. The search for living goats has yielded nothing.
Thanks to the rapid support via ISARD, we have been able to arrange for some basic necessities to be brought from the city for the families, now that the road is somewhat passable again. These are sleeping mattresses, duvets and 25 kg bags of rice.
The foundation is in consultation for further support with regard to hospital costs and investments in the purchase of new goats for the affected families.
Together we make the difference
How special is it that just when this page was finished, a message came in that a donation of €1000,- had been received from the Soroptimistclub Lisse-Bollenstreek. We have used the gift immediately to support the affected families, to contribute to the medical costs and to purchase new goats. For more information about the club, see their website.
