Green light for the 2nd phase

As of 1 October we were able to give the green light for the second phase of the project: the completion and layout of the extra school functions. The builders have been summoned to come again!
Thanks to the various sponsorships from family, friends, strangers, companies, Rotary and the contribution of 50% extra from the Wilde Ganzen, we have now collected €41,500,- more than 85% of the financial budget.
Still about €5,500 to go to get the entire budget closed before the end of the year.

What's going to happen?

The builders will start finishing the last 4 rooms at the end of October.
– School kitchen: the plan is to provide school meals and create a school garden in which the students learn to grow their own vegetables. This is based on the idea of stimulating a healthy diet. Students can be offered at least one healthy meal per day from the school kitchen. The kitchen will be run by a team of moms: Dil Maya Shrestha, Laxmi Shrestha and others to support.
– Computer room / library: this space will be used for the education of the children, but will also have a community function. In Nepal, a comprehensive e-learning curriculum is available for all age levels including educational materials for educators in both Nepali and English.
Dabaki Shrestha leads this section.
– Teacher's residence: teachers sometimes come from far and do not have direct housing in Sailung. It will be a bit easier to get teachers to Sailung by means of a furnished accommodation.
– Sanitary building: a spacious sanitary building will be built on the edge of the site with the necessary toilets and washing facilities for boys and girls.
– Schoolyard: will be furnished after construction and secured with a partition to the lower land.
– School garden: the location of this is still under discussion.

Festive opening of the school

The school is ready for use! The school grounds have already been cleaned up and the classrooms are beautifully decorated with various instructive decorations. But due to the vicissitudes of Corona, the official opening of the school has been postponed until next week, when Jan Post visits Sailung.

Child sponsors in the spotlight

In the past 3 months we have welcomed 3 sponsors again; they each support a schoolchild with a multi-year sponsorship agreement. To date, 16 children have been sponsored in this way. During the past corona period, the income of many of the families in Sailung has fallen below the minimum to be able to contribute to school fees. We will pay extra attention to this after Jan Post's visit to Sailung.

Visit to Sailung

On Friday 29 October, Jan Post will leave as a representative of the board for a 3-week visit to Sailung. We are already looking forward to seeing the children, family and community again.
An extensive program is being prepared to discuss the continuation of the project and the future.
Jan can leave the fear of the cold nights at home thanks to the donation of a down sleeping bag and climbing overalls from friend Kiek, who has used it to climb to the top of Mount Everest in Nepal.
There will probably be many stories, photos and videos that we will be happy to share with you.

Corona

Fortunately, the wave of Corona infection has also decreased sharply in Nepal. Unfortunately, the school has been closed for a longer period and more than 70% of the children has had Corona infections.
There have also been many infections among adults, but few serious consequences are known.

container project

Over the past period we have become more and more interested in the possibilities of getting a sea container, filled with many practical items, to Nepal. A lot has to be done for that. Several lines have been set up at various companies and we are now in contact with colleague organizations and the government in Nepal.
What is not cooperating are the existentially increasing costs of container transport. We are considering sustainable options.
